At the Herts county show

tom

It rained, and then rained some more and just when the sun came out to play, it rained again. Oh I love the English summer. I know that Queen's has yet to start and we are a month from Cliff singing (in the rain) at Wimbledon but just a little sunshine was what the doctor ordered; it arrived a week early and has since gone to ground.

The Hertfordshire Show kicked off with a slumbering murmur at the turnstiles at 9 but the lashings of heavenly water did not deter and we were soon in the thick of it -  chopping, cooking and chatting ourselves through over a thousand customers.

It was a touch of the 1960’s soup kitchen without spoon in hand but an appetite from those waiting for something free but not sure what. Corporate speak was the order of the day, compelling every eater to the story of Lussmanns and the importance of what they were about to consume. They had to listen, understand and then, just as they were handed an organic lamb wrap, a postcard was thrust upon them summoning them to eat at one of our restaurants very soon. A tall order in these days of immediate carefree consumption but our rain drenched diners seemed soaked to the bone in their appreciation for what we were doing. We shall see if they return with grandmothers in tow.

I hope that Sunday will truly be a Sun Day without a drop of water in sight. Pray to lazy clouds and warm air drifting carelessly as summer starts to migrate to our shores from far far away.....
